One of the most significant regional holidays is the Day of the Balearic Islands ( Dia de les Illes Balears ), celebrated annually on March 1st . This day marks the granting of autonomy to the Balearic Islands in 1983. Festivities across the region include street parties, cultural events, and live concerts. On certain public holidays, shops in the Balearic Islands are permitted to open – including today, March 1st , in honor of Balearic Islands Day.
